SHAHID AFRIDI’S apology yesterday on behalf of the three players implicated in spot-fixing, and suspended by the ICC, offered an astonishing insight into the power-struggle going on in Pakistan’s cricket team.

English is not Afridi’s first language, and he is renowned for rash shots at the crease, but there was no ambiguity about what he said, or what he intended.

Pakistan’s Twenty20 and one-day captain wanted to distance himself as far as possible from the Test captain, Salman Butt, and the bowlers, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif.

“I think it’s very bad news,” Afridi said live at Cardiff to Sky Sports News. “I think on behalf of these players — I know they are not in this series — but on behalf of these boys, I want to say sorry.” Afridi’s next words were not exactly grammatical. But his actual words were: “on behalf of these boys I want to say sorry — and the players were — to the cricketing lovers and to all the cricketing nations.”

Would Afridi have apologised in this way to the cricket world if he thought that Butt, Amir and Asif were innocent? Surely not. And had Afridi spoken to the three players at all? “No,” he said. He had not spoken to them – and had not asked if he could apologise on their behalf.

Afridi was then asked if he felt any anger about the investigations being carried out in the case of the three Pakistanis. “No,” he replied.

Then Afridi provided some useful information about Mazhar Majeed – who allegedly acted as middleman between the News of the World and the three suspended Pakistanis – and his brother Azhar.

“These guys, Azhar and Mazhar, they are their manager.” — in other words the manager, or agent, of the three suspended Pakistanis. And, Afridi added helpfully, they had been in Australia – - where Pakistan had lost every competitive game, including the Sydney Test from a position of almost unassailable strength — and in the West Indies for the World Twenty20, where Pakistan were knocked out in the semi-finals, under Afridi’s captaincy.

Highly-experienced observers of the current Pakistan team, including former players, had detected a split within the camp — and of a different order from the analysis by the Anti Corruption and Security Unit, which had described the team as ‘dysfunctional’ after their tour of Australia. But Afridi’s statements suggest a serious struggle for power, influence, and maybe more besides.

In the News of the World last weekend Mazhar Majeed alleged that he had a relationship with seven members of the Pakistan team, including the implicated three; and that the last Test which had been fixed had been the Sydney Test, and the last one-day international which had been fixed was the opening Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka in June.

Afridi resigned as Pakistan’s Test captain in July after a single match against Australia at Lord’s, to be replaced by Butt.
